Top 10 Mountain Bike Gifts Around & Under $10

By Kevin Tisue, About.com

Here is a quick guide to our best suggestions for $10 mountain bike gifts. OK, loosely around and under $10 US. These are easy to find readily available $10 mountain bike gift items that almost any mountain biker would appreciate.

There are plenty of good ideas for $10 mountain bike gifts, so read on and let us guide you to the perfect mountain bike gift that will fit into your budget.

1. Mountain Bike Socks

A mountain biker can never have too many socks. You will find there are a lot of different graphic options to help make your gift personal.

Don't forget to get the right size, and stick with subtle graphics if you are having trouble picking the right pair.

2. Trail Tool - Multi-Tool

Every mountain biker should carry a trail or multi-tool with them so they are prepared for basic repairs out on the dirt. You will find Trail tools range in price from $10-$50 US.

When it comes to multi tools, there is a fuzzy line between practical and overkill. I always recommend multi-tools that have a built in chain tool as a minimum since broken chains are nearly impossible to fix without one. Bigger more expensive tools can be too heavy and bulky.

3. Triangle Allen Tool

A triangle Allen tool is one of the most handy tools a biker can have in their bike tool collection.

A triangle Allen tool has three sizes (Usually 4mm, 5mm, 6mm) of Allen wrenches arranged in a handy triangle that allows easy access to any of the sizes while providing a good grip.

4. Bottle Opener - Beverage Wrench

A lot of mountain bikers enjoy beverages that require special beverage tools to open. A few companies in the bike industry have taken it upon themselves to provide these tools for purchase.

One of my favorites is the Beverage Wrench by Pedros.

5. Trail Pump

The trail Pump is another item every mountain biker should have. We all get flats, and if you aren't prepared, it can be a long walk home.

I prefer pumps with fewer features, an easy valve clamp, and bigger volume. Bigger volume doesn't necessarily mean heavier. I also recommend carrying your pump in a hydration backpack rather than mounted on the frame where it will last through about one muddy ride.

6. Energy Bars / Energy Gel

For some of us it seems mountain biking is just a good excuse to eat candy bars and frosting. But Hey, if they taste good and help us ride faster and longer, who's complaining?

As with most outdoor products there are a lot of brands to choose from. As a mountain biker, it's nice to get a small assortment of brands and flavors so you don't get sick of any of them and its always nice to try something new.

7. Patch Kit

A patch kit is another one of those items every mountain biker should have with them out on the trail. Unfortunately, we all get flats, and really, patching a flat isn't that hard.

I prefer the tiny little glueless patch kits. Park Tools makes one called The Super Patch Kit. It's about the size of a bottle cap.

8. Spare Inner Tubes

We all should carry a spare tube on any serious ride. There are some flats a patch kit simply can't fix

Just check the side of the tire for its size and get the appropriately sized tube.

9. Safety Taillght

Mountain bikers who ride at night are always in danger of getting rear ended, especially by cars. These handy taillights simply clip to your helmet, pack, seat, or clothing and flash a little red light to let everyone behind you know you're there.

These lights are simple and cheap and they save lives.

10. Safety Bell

The safety bell has long been a part of biking. They simply allow you to make people aware of your presence, much like a horn on a car. For mountain bikers, they are not only useful on the streets but some people use them as a warning as they approach blind corners.

It's a great idea, and they make for a pretty good gift. Remember, for safety bells, the smaller the better.
