Taking Care of Business

Bike Cockpit

As I type this my wood stove is cranking, but these days the mercury is rising outside my house too. That means just one thing: more time in the saddle! Before you and I pedal to the nearest sun-soaked singletrack, we need to take care of some business first.

  • Set Up Your Bike Cockpit: On a mountain bike, the cockpit is where the handlebars, stem,  brake levers, shifters and grips rest. Taking just a few minutes (literally less than a half hour) to adjust your handlebar controls properly can drastically improve the way you ride.
  • Build a Mountain Bike Trail the Right Way: This time of year especially, many mountain bikers find themselves itching to build their very own trail, or contribute their services to existing singletrack that needs some work. Move beyond simply riding your local mountain bike trails--learn to build them with these basic steps.
  • Bring These Items on Your Next Ride: Carrying the necessary supplies will make your next journey into the woods both safe and fun. These are the items you should have with you on your bike at all times.
