Getting Lost

Friday December 29, 2006
I was just trying to remember the longest rides I've ever done. I've done quite a few, but it's hard to quantify what the longest really is. Then I figured it out.

It wasn't some crazy 50 or 100 mile day, it was only 35 miles, about 25 of it lost. We got lost one day up above Steamboat Springs, Colorado with about 10 billion mosquitoes. No map, no compass, and no clue. The ride ended after dark with a 20 mile hitched ride back into town complete with a boy scout masters lecture about who should've had the map. I'm pretty sure that was me.

Funny thing is, that memory is one of my favorite memories on a bike. I have no idea why.

Really, it's never fun when you're lost. It might be fun later, but not when it's the now. If you can't see where you're going, you should always know where you are.

Check out our Trail Resource Section and go out prepared.
