Thunder Storms

Wednesday June 7, 2006

Mountain bike riding in a thunder storm is never really a good idea. It really doesn't take long for the weather to turn from perfect to nasty to deadly. Unfortunately, I seem to somehow find myself stuck in a couple storms every year. When you go out for a long ride in the mountains it can be really hard to predict what the weather might be like in the end.

So what do you do? First, try to stay on top of the weather. Second, if you get stuck in a storm, stay in low areas, stay off exposed fields and ridges, don't hang out in a wash or gully, and never shelter under a single or small group of trees. If you feel you have a safe passage out, get out as fast as you can. I usually start heading home as soon as I see something heading my way or at the first sound of thunder.
